Strawberry Shortcake Ingredients

2⁄3 cup sugar

¼ cup shortening

1 egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

¼ teaspoon salt

1½ cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

½ cup milk

How to Make Strawberry Shortcake

woodmans-strawberry-shortcakePreheat the oven to 350˚ F. In a medium-size bowl, cream together the sugar and shortening. Add the egg and the vanilla and beat well. In a separate bowl, combine all the dry ingredients, and add alternately, with the milk, to the creamed mixture. Spread in a greased 9-inch square baking pan. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.

Cut into nine servings. Split each serving horizontally, and fill with whipped cream and strawberries. Replace the top of the cake; garnish with more berries and a dollop of whipped cream. Serve immediately. Serves 9.
