Tartar Sauce Recipe by The Woodman Family
Found in cookbooks since the 1800s, tartar sauce was first used by the mayo-mad French as a condiment to their raw minced beef dish, Steak tartare, and is purportedly named for the Tartars of Russia’s Volga Region. Also popular on this side of the Atlantic, tartar sauce (at least for some) has been “the” long-standing “must-have” seafood accompaniment since the early 1900s.
Tartar Sauce Ingredients
1½ cup mayonnaise
2⁄3 cup dill relish
1 tablespoon onion, minced
How to Make Homemade Tartar Sauce
Put all ingredients into a mixing bowl and stir until well blended.
Recipe Note: Tartar sauce tastes better when you allow the ingredients to meld in the refrigerator for a day prior to using.
